This workshop is appropriate for: Classroom Teachers, Music & Art Teachers, Special Educators, SLPs, SLPAs, OTs, PTs, Paraeducators, Individual Assistants, BCBAs, and Behavior Interventionists.

The workshop content is relevant for: students who are developmentally between Preschool and 2nd grade.

Description: Come prepared to play! This will be a full day of hands on learning. The day will be divided into multiple sections, each with a learning component followed by opportunities to immediately apply and practice using AAC in play based activities connected to language, literacy, math, and social communication skill development. Participants will also learn through videos, case studies and role playing. They will leave with a collection of resources to support their continued learning and practice.

Learning Outcomes: Participants will

  1. Increase their understanding of the neuroscience behind play (neurotypical & neurodivergent) and it’s impact on the development of autonomous AAC communicators.

  2. Practice at least 3 specific strategies for confidently and effectively embedding AAC into any play situation.

  3. Identify specific skills that are supported in play and explain their relationship to communication development for students with complex communication needs.

  4. Learn to identify and troubleshoot access barriers to embedding AAC into outdoor play, messy play, sensory play and unpredictable play.

Important Information:

  • Do NOT bring your student’s AAC system or tools. If you have an extra system or tool, you are welcome to bring these. You will be asked about this information when registering. We will provide a variety of AAC systems and tools for those who do not have access to extras.

  • This workshop will include the use of speech generating devices as well as tools such as Go-Talks and printed AAC materials. Your student does not need to be using a high tech AAC system (like an iPad or other speech generating device) for you to attend.

  • CEUs will NOT be provided. However, we will provide certificates of completion to all participants present for the entire day.

  • Cancellation & Refund Policy:

    • Cancellation more than 30 days prior to the event will receive an 80% refund.

    • Cancellation within 30 days of the event will not be refunded. However, the registration can be transferred to another individual from the same organization free of charge.
